Your First Umrah: A Practical Preparation Guide
Performing Umrah for the first time is a moment many wait years for. Good preparation lets you spend your energy on worship rather than logistics. This guide covers the practical side — documents, packing, health, and what actually happens when you land.
Before You Leave
- Passport: at least six months' validity from your travel date.
- Umrah visa: processed through a licensed agent; allow at least a week, more in Ramadan season.
- Vaccinations: check current Saudi entry requirements — meningitis (ACWY) certificates are commonly required.
- Nusuk app: install it before travel; permits for Rawdah in Madinah are booked through it.
- Learn the rites: review the steps of Umrah — ihram, tawaf, sa'i, and halq/taqsir — before you fly, not on the plane.
What to Pack
- Two sets of ihram for men (one to wear, one spare) and comfortable, modest clothing for women.
- Well-broken-in sandals or slippers — you will walk far more than you expect.
- Unscented soap and moisturizer for the state of ihram.
- A small drawstring bag for your footwear inside the mosques.
- Any regular medication in original packaging, plus basic painkillers and rehydration salts.
Arrival and the First Umrah
Most pilgrims land in Jeddah and travel to Makkah by road (about 1.5 hours) or take the Haramain high-speed train. If you arrive in ihram, you will typically proceed to perform Umrah after checking in — but there is no obligation to rush. Rest first if you need to; a calm, focused Umrah is better than an exhausted one.
Common First-Timer Mistakes
- Trying to perform tawaf on the ground floor at peak hours — the upper levels are longer but far calmer.
- Skipping hydration. Zamzam is everywhere in the Haram; drink regularly.
- Overpacking the schedule. Leave unstructured time for prayer and reflection — that is what you came for.
- Not agreeing on a meeting point with your group before entering the mosque. Phones lose signal in the crowd.
